No, just the desire to give singing a go!
We are a Peterborough based male voice chorus, now in our 33rd year, singing in four part (bass, baritone, lead and tenor) Barber Shop style harmony. We are always looking for new members – no singing or musical experience necessary!
No, just the desire to give singing a go!
No – most of our members have little or no music training. All our songs are provided with “teach tracks” for each part (bass, baritone, lead and tenor) as well as the sheet music – you just need to listen to the track for your part to learn the notes!
No! Everyone is welcome to come along and give it a go!
Singing is good for you mentally, physically and socially! It improves your breathing, circulation and posture, as well as improving your mood and general well-being. You will make new lasting friendships both within the chorus and among other choruses at social gatherings and at other events where choruses get together to sing and socialise.
Rehearsals always start with a warm-up (physical and vocal), followed by work on “new” songs. After a tea break we continue rehearsing, brushing up on our repertoire and practicing for any upcoming performances.
It doesn’t have to be! At Hereward Harmony we generally only compete at the annual national convention every few years – it is a good way of gauging our progress (or lack of it!) against other choruses. Our main aim is social singing for pleasure, with about 10 performances or singouts during the year, both for charity and to swell the chorus coffers!
Once you decide that you would like to join us (usually after about 3 months), our monthly subscription is only £12. This covers all uniform required, as well as sheet music and teach tracks. A proportion of the subs goes to our national society (BABS).
BABS (British Association of Barbershop Singers) organise the annual convention for chorus and quartet competitions as well as the annual Harmony College. They also arrange other events such as directors’ workshops and “big sings” (one day workshops where several choruses get together to work on a specific song) as well as providing a wealth of resources to help promote and develop barbershop singing in the UK.
We don’t have “official” quartets, but over the years several quartets have formed, performed and competed. Quartet singing is a great way to improve technique and confidence – there’s nowhere to hide in a quartet!
£12/month
We don’t ask for any subscriptions to be paid until you are happy to offically join the chorus – usually after 3 months or so. So don’t be afraid to come along and see if barbershop singing with Hereward Harmony is for you!
